You've probably asked yourself: "Why do my photos look so flat and boring?" You've got the gear, you've read the blogs, but something's off. The answer isn't a new lens or a better camera. It's the myths you've been told about composition. Let's bust them.
Myth #1: "The Rule of Thirds is a Law"
You've heard it a thousand times: put your subject on a third, never in the center. But that's not a rule, it's a guideline. Center composition can be incredibly powerful for symmetrical scenes or when you want to emphasize a single subject. The real problem isn't where you place your subject; it's that you're not thinking about what you want the viewer to feel. If you're just blindly following a grid, you're letting a tip replace your own judgment. Break it deliberately, not out of ignorance.
Myth #2: "You Need a Shallow Depth of Field for Every Portrait"
Blur that background, right? Not always. A shallow depth of field (using a wide aperture like f/2.8) isolates your subject, but it can also strip away context. Sometimes you want the environment to tell the story—a chef in a kitchen, a climber on a cliff. Depth of field is controlled by three things: aperture, subject distance, and focal length. A smaller f-number (like f/2.8) gives you that creamy blur, but a larger f-number (like f/8 or f/16) brings the background into focus. Ask yourself: does the background add or subtract from the story? If it adds, stop shooting wide open.
Myth #3: "A Wide-Angle Lens is for Landscapes, a Telephoto for Portraits"
That's a lazy shortcut. Focal length changes more than just how much of the scene you capture—it changes perspective and compression. A 50mm lens on a full-frame is considered "normal" because it roughly matches human perspective. A 24mm wide-angle can exaggerate foreground elements and create dynamic, in-your-face shots. A 200mm telephoto compresses distances, making backgrounds look closer, which is why it's flattering for portraits. But don't box yourself in. Use a wide-angle for a portrait that includes the environment, or a telephoto for a landscape detail that isolates a far-off mountain. The lens is a tool, not a label.
Myth #4: "You Must Always Expose to the Right (ETTR)"
You've read the forums: push your histogram to the right to capture more data and reduce noise. That's true for scenes with a wide dynamic range, but it's not a universal law. If you're shooting a high-contrast scene—say, a street scene with a bright sky and dark shadows—ETTR can blow out your highlights. The histogram is a graphic representation of your tonal range, from black on the left to white on the right. A heavy concentration on the right means highlights may be blown out. Instead of blindly pushing right, learn to read the histogram for the specific scene. If you're shooting a moody, low-key portrait, you might legitimately have the histogram bunched to the left. That's fine, as long as you're getting the look you want and you're not clipping shadows so much that you lose detail.
Myth #5: "You Can Fix Everything in Post"
"Fix it in post" is a dangerous mantra. Yes, RAW files are 16-bit with 4096 tones per channel and over 68 billion colors, compared to JPEG's 16 million. That gives you incredible flexibility to recover blown-out highlights or lift shadows. But RAW cannot rescue an image if the camera settings pushed the tones outside the sensor's range. If the highlight is clipped to pure white, there's no data to recover. The same goes for shadows. Your composition is the foundation; post-processing can enhance, but it can't fix a badly composed shot. Get it right in camera, and post becomes a polish, not a repair.
Myth #6: "Always Use a Fast Shutter Speed to Freeze Motion"
Freezing motion is cool, but it can also suck the life out of a photo. A fast shutter speed, like 1/1000s, freezes a runner mid-stride, but it also kills the sense of movement. Sometimes you want the blur—a waterfall silky smooth, a car's light trails. Slow shutter speeds (like 1/4s) create motion blur that conveys speed and energy. There's no rule that says you must freeze everything. Think about what you want to communicate. If you're shooting a cyclist, a panning shot with a slow shutter and a steady hand can blur the background while keeping the subject sharp, conveying speed far better than a frozen frame.
Myth #7: "Expensive Gear Means Better Composition"
This is the biggest myth of all. A full-frame camera has a larger sensor, which generally offers better low-light performance and less noise than an APS-C or Micro Four Thirds body. But a $3000 camera won't fix a cluttered background or a crooked horizon. Composition is about seeing, not spending. It's about your eye, your choices, your ability to frame a moment. You can create stunning compositions with a phone, as long as you master the basics. The best gear is the one that's with you, and the best composition is the one you actually see.
Quick tip: Before you press the shutter, scan the edges of your frame. Are there any distractions—a lamp post growing out of your subject's head, a trash can in the corner? Move your feet or adjust your angle. It takes two seconds and saves you hours in post.
Bottom line: The single best move you can make is to stop following rules blindly and start making deliberate choices. Every composition—the placement, the depth of field, the shutter speed—should serve the story you're telling. Break the myths, trust your eye, and your photos will finally look like you meant them.
