Who This Is For
This is for anyone who's ever looked at a photo and thought, "Why does this look flat?" Or worse, "Why are the highlights blown out?" You've got the camera, you've got the lens, but the images aren't popping. The fix isn't a new body. It's what you do after you press the shutter.
I'm not going to teach you how to use Lightroom. I'm going to teach you how to think about post-processing. Because if you don't understand what the histogram is telling you, or why you should shoot RAW, no slider will save you. This is a straight-talking walkthrough. Follow it, and your photos will improve. Skip it, and you'll keep fighting your files.
Step 1: Shoot RAW, Always
First, set your camera to RAW. Not JPEG. RAW. Here's why: a RAW file is 16-bit, capturing 4096 tones per color channel, which works out to over 68 billion colors (Camera RAW, University of Delaware). A JPEG? Max 16 million colors. That's not a typo. RAW holds back detail in the shadows and highlights that you can pull out later. It's like having a negative you can redevelop any time, non-destructively. Shoot JPEG and you're stuck with the camera's interpretation.
Now, the catch: RAW won't save a badly exposed shot. If you've clipped the highlights to pure white, there's no data to recover. The sensor recorded nothing. So you've got to get the exposure right in camera. That's where the histogram comes in.
Step 2: Master the Histogram
The histogram is that little graph on your camera's screen. It shows the tonal range of your image, from pure black on the left (0) to pure white on the right (255) (Histogram, Nikon USA). If you see a pile of tones smushed against the left edge, you're underexposed—shadow detail is gone. If it's jammed against the right, your highlights are blown. The goal is to keep the graph from touching either edge, unless you're going for a specific look.
Here's a pro move: expose to the right (ETTR). Push your exposure as bright as you can without clipping the highlights, so the histogram crowds the right side. Noise lives in the shadows, so by exposing bright and then pulling the brightness down in post, you get cleaner images (Camera 101, MIT). This is a game-changer once you get it.
Step 3: Fix White Balance Like a Human
White balance isn't about making everything neutral. It's about color temperature, measured in Kelvin. Sunlight is about 5,400 to 6,000 K, household bulbs are around 2,500 to 3,000 K, and a candle flame is a cozy 1,200 to 1,500 K (White balance, Michigan Tech). Set your white balance wrong and you get a yellow mess under tungsten or a blue cast in daylight.
Shoot in RAW and you can fix white balance in post without any loss. But don't be lazy. If you're shooting JPEG, get it right in camera. Use a gray card or just set it manually for the lighting. And don't trust auto white balance. It's a guess. You're better than that.
Step 4: Use the Exposure Triangle to Your Advantage
Post-processing can't fix a photo that was taken with the wrong settings. You need to understand the exposure triangle: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. A wider aperture (smaller f-number) lets in more light but gives a shallower depth of field. A faster shutter freezes motion. A higher ISO makes the sensor more sensitive but adds noise. You already know this. But do you know how to apply it?
Let's say you're shooting a landscape. You want deep depth of field, so you stop down to f/11. But that means less light, so you need a slower shutter. If you're handholding, you risk camera shake. Rule of thumb: keep your shutter speed at least 1/focal length. So on a 50mm lens, don't go slower than 1/50s. Or use a tripod. Or crank the ISO. The point is, post-processing can't fix motion blur.
One more thing: the Sunny 16 rule. In bright sunshine, set your aperture to f/16 and your shutter speed to the reciprocal of your ISO. So at ISO 100, that's 1/100s. It's a great starting point when you're in a hurry or your meter is confused (Sunny 16, UW-Madison).
Step 5: Don't Blow the Highlights—Recover Them
You've got your histogram looking good, but sometimes the scene is just too contrasty. The sky is bright, the foreground is dark. You can't fit it all in one exposure. That's what graduated ND filters are for. They hold back the bright sky so you can capture detail in both. But if you didn't use one, you can try to recover highlights in RAW. Just know that if you've blown them out completely, there's nothing to recover.
And here's a quick tip: use your camera's highlight warning. Those blinking areas on the playback screen? That's your camera telling you where you've lost detail. Use it.
Step 6: Post-Process with Intent
Now you're in your editing software. Start with the histogram there. Adjust exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows—all those sliders. But don't go overboard. The goal is to make the photo look like what you saw, not a psychedelic mess.
One thing to watch: noise. If you underexposed and tried to push it up, you'll see noise in the shadows. Larger sensors handle this better. In Imatest's tests, a full-frame Sony A9 had much better dynamic range than a compact camera (InfoDR, Imatest). That's why you shoot RAW and expose right in the first place.
Another tool: the histogram in your editing software. Use it to check that you're not clipping anything. And if you're working on a photo with a color cast, fix white balance there too.
What can go wrong? Everything. You can over-sharpen, over-saturate, and make it look terrible. Less is more. Take a break, come back, and look at it with fresh eyes.
What I'd Actually Do
Here's my no-BS recommendation: Shoot RAW. Use ETTR. Set your white balance manually or fix it in post. And don't rely on post-processing to fix a bad exposure. Get it right in camera, and use post to fine-tune.
If you're serious about your photography, spend more time on the histogram and less on presets. That's the skill that will make your photos stand out.
