How I Edit Photos: A Workflow That Actually Works for Me

1. Start with RAW, always

If your camera can shoot RAW, use it. RAW files are 16-bit and contain over 68 billion colors, while JPEGs max out at 16 million (University of Delaware). That extra data means you can recover blown highlights or lift shadows without the file falling apart. RAW is developed non-destructively—your edits are stored separately, so you can redevelop the image anytime. I treat JPEG as a last resort for when I need to send a photo instantly. The downside? My first step in any editor is to set white balance. Color temperature is measured in Kelvin: candlelight is around 1000 K, household bulbs 2500–3000 K, and average sunlight 5400–6000 K (Michigan Tech). If I shot under tungsten lights with a daylight white balance, the image looks orange; setting it to tungsten cools it down. I often use a gray card or the auto white balance as a starting point, then fine-tune.

2. Nail the exposure with the histogram

The histogram is my go-to exposure check. It graphs tones from black (0) on the left to white (255) on the right. A spike on the left means underexposure and lost shadow detail; a spike on the right means blown highlights (Nikon USA). I aim for a histogram that just touches the right edge without clipping—a technique called expose to the right (ETTR). Why? Noise lives in the shadows, so a brighter capture gives cleaner files when you pull the brightness down later (MIT Computational Photography).

In practice, I adjust exposure in post using the histogram as my guide. If it's too far left, I increase exposure; if it's too far right, I decrease it. Be careful: if you clip highlights in-camera, no RAW file can recover them. I've learned that lesson the hard way on a sunny beach shoot.

3. Shape the light and color

Once exposure and white balance are set, I move to tone curves and color grading. I rarely use presets; instead, I adjust highlights, shadows, whites, and blacks individually. For landscapes, I often add a slight S-curve to boost contrast. For portraits, I lift shadows and soften highlights to flatter skin.

Color grading is where personal style comes in. I tend to warm up golden-hour shots and cool down blue-hour scenes. But don't overdo it—subtlety wins. If you're into black-and-white, the histogram still helps you judge contrast.

4. What can go wrong: overediting

The biggest mistake I see is overediting—pushing sliders too far, creating halos, or making skin look plastic. Another trap is relying on the histogram alone; it doesn't tell you if the image looks good. Always zoom in to 100% to check noise and sharpness. And remember: if you underexpose so badly that the sensor captured no data, RAW won't save you. The information simply isn't there (University of Delaware).
