Imagine you're setting up a portrait in mixed light
You've got a window throwing soft daylight from the left, a tungsten lamp warming the background, and your subject is wearing a white shirt. You meter, you shoot, and the shirt is blown out or the face is muddy. We've all been there. The camera's meter wants everything to be middle gray—it doesn't know that the snowfield should be white or that the black dog should be black (MIchigan Tech). So you dial exposure compensation, maybe +1 or +2 EV for that bright shirt, and suddenly you're in the game.
But here's the thing: the tools you choose—your sensor and your lens—determine how much headroom you have when the light gets tricky. I've shot with everything from Micro Four Thirds to full-frame, and I've got strong opinions. If you're a portrait or event photographer who works in variable light, I think you should be on full-frame with a fast prime. Let me explain why.
The Heavyweight: Sensor Size
Sensor size is the foundation. A full-frame sensor measures 36 × 24 mm, while APS-C is about 23.5 × 15.6 mm (or 22.3 × 14.9 for Canon), and Micro Four Thirds is a mere 17.3 × 13 mm (Canon). That difference isn't just about resolution—it's about how many photons you can catch. The Contender: Lens Choice
But sensor size isn't the only tool in the lighting toolbox. Lenses control depth of field and how you shape that light. A 50mm f/1.8 on a full-frame gives you that creamy background separation that clients love. The same lens on an APS-C body gives you the field of view of an 80mm lens (Canon)—nice for portraits, but you need to step back, and the depth of field is effectively deeper because you're using a shorter focal length to get the same framing.
Here's the rule: a smaller f-number like f/2.8 means a wider opening and shallower depth of field; a larger f-number like f/16 gives you deep focus (Wikipedia). If you want to isolate your subject from a busy background, you need a fast lens. Let's be concrete. I shoot a portrait session in a park at golden hour. With my full-frame camera and a 85mm f/1.8 lens, I can open up to f/2.8 to blur the background while keeping the subject's eyes tack sharp. The dynamic range lets me expose for the sky and recover the shadows in post without noise. If I were on APS-C with a kit zoom at f/5.6, I'd have to crank the ISO, which brings noise, and I'd lose that creamy background. So Who Wins?
If you're a landscape photographer who shoots from a tripod at base ISO, you can get away with APS-C or even Micro Four Thirds—the dynamic range difference is less critical when you have time to bracket and blend. If you're a street photographer who values a small, unobtrusive kit, APS-C might be your sweet spot. But if you're a portrait or event photographer who works in unpredictable light, I argue that full-frame is the best investment. The measured dynamic range advantage (Imatest) and the low-light performance (Canon) give you the flexibility to shape light rather than fight it.
Of course, sensor size isn't everything. You still need to master white balance—setting it wrong will give you a color cast that no sensor can fix (Michigan Tech). Daylight is about 5500K, tungsten is 3200K, and shade can be 8000K (WPI). And you need to understand your histogram: if your tones are piled up on the left, you're underexposing; if they're jammed against the right, you're clipping highlights (Nikon).
Here's my recommendation: if you can afford it, buy a full-frame body and one fast prime lens—a 50mm f/1.8 or an 85mm f/1.8 is a great start. That combo will give you the dynamic range and depth of field control that make lighting easier. If your budget is tight, get the best APS-C you can and invest in good glass—the lens will outlast the body.
