Stopping Blown-Out Skies: Why I Always Expose to the Right

Stop fighting blown skies and shadow noise. I explain why exposing to the right—pushing highlights to the edge of the histogram—is the smartest lighting move, and how to do it with any camera.

If you shoot RAW (and you should), ETTR is the single most effective technique for capturing the full dynamic range of a scene. It's not about getting the brightest possible image—it's about maximizing the data your sensor records so you have the most flexibility in post. Step 1: Understand Your Histogram

First, learn to read your histogram. It's a graph of tones, from pure black on the left (0 in digital terms) to pure white on the right (255). A heavy pile-up on the left means underexposure and lost shadows; a mountain on the right means blown highlights (Nikon USA). But here's the thing: a 'correct' histogram isn't always centered. In high-contrast scenes, you have to choose where to lose data. Don't be afraid to see a slightly bright image on the back of the screen. When you get home, pull the exposure down in Lightroom or your editor, and marvel at the clean shadows.
